ABOUT US: ixöq (ee-shauk) is a women owned & operated social enterprise that designs and creates unique, colorful & functional totes and decorative storage containers made from recycled plastic cord. All of our products are designed by Katie (co-founder/director/owner) & hand woven by our partner artisans in Guatemala.
The mission of ixöq, which means woman in the Mayan dialects, Kaqchikel and Tzutujil, is to honor the traditions of and provide support to women artisans through a partnership focused on the design, production, and sale of ethically made goods. The work we do with the artisans is first and foremost our priority. We take pride in creating pieces that incorporate trending colors in bold, thoughtful combinations—designs that are unique to the ixöq brand—while honoring and highlighting the skill and craft of the artisans who bring them to life. The women are paid a fair wage for the work & not dependent on sales to be compensated. The recycled plastic cord is locally sourced in Guatemala. We follow fairtrade standards in our production.
The studio in Brookland is a combination of workspace and retail shop. All inventory management, order fulfillment, etc… takes place in the studio. The studio is only open to the public on Friday afternoons (2-6), Saturdays (9-3) or by appointment. When open to the public it is possible to work on inventory and shop management while still maintaining the retail space. We strive to create a welcoming, friendly space that is part of the vibrant Arts Walk community.
